Les Jardin de la Mer

The first projects to be completed on the Waterfront were the very successful gardens, Les Jardins de la Mer and the café ‘La Fregate’ in 1997.  The café, designed by celebrity architect Will Alsop was locally interpreted as representing an upside down boat.

In 1997 the gardens won the ‘Beautiful Britain’ Award from the Britain in Bloom organisation while their illumination won the Ecliathi Jersey Award in 1997.  The centrepiece of the gardens is a circular maze, the seaward half formed from hedges but the landward side being made up of walls of water from jets of varying heights and which rise and fall intermittently creating pathways that change over time and lead to the centrally placed ‘Dolphin and Swimmer’ sculpture.
