In 1995 the States decided that the Island Site should be developed as a bus station, freeing up the Weighbridge area for improvement.
WEB’s preferred developer, Island Developments Limited commenced development of the site in 2005 with completion of the new transportation centre (Liberation Station) in October 2007.
Liberty Wharf, the new name for the Island Site, serves the needs of the Esplanade’s burgeoning business population. Comprising 4.645 sq.m. (50,000 sq.ft.) of retail space, a new transportation centre, apartments and a landmark tourist office.
Currently under construction, a cobbled, covered pedestrian mall will provide a stylish shopping experience and will capture the Island’s Anglo-French influences.
