Steam Clock

The top of the New North Quay is built on land reclaimed from the sea in the 1920’s.

At the time the area was known as the dump. In subsequent years its appearance did not improve the area was used as a car park and bus storage yard. The development of the adjacent warehouse buildings which provided a home for the Maritime Museum was the catalyst for improvement.

With the support of Tourism, the Heritage Trust and the States, WEB commissioned an artist to design a performance clock with a theme that would signal and complement the adjacent Maritime Museum.

Accordingly, a noted sculptor, Gordon Young, was commissioned to design his concept of one of Jersey’s original paddle steamers and, together with Smith of Derby, designed the clock named Ariadne which is now in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest steam clock.

The Steam clock was 'launched' on Sunday 10th August 1997.
