Weighbridge

The Weighbridge redevelopment was the first project delivered in line with the Masterplan for the St. Helier Waterfront drawn up in 2007 by Hopkins Architects. WEB delivered the project directly using local designers, engineers and contractors.

The new public open space that was opened in July 2008 has enhanced the public realm of the waterfront by creating a square that now accommodates regular food and produce markets, arts and craft stalls and numerous annual events and exhibitions.  Businesses in the area have welcomed the new opportunity for alfresco dining and the petanque terrains have been a huge success.

In specifying plants, paving materials and street furniture for the project great care was taken to ensure quality in terms of aesthetics and durability. Granite materials were purchased directly by WEB and workmanship on site was subject to rigorous supervision by WEB representatives. Proving that the old and the new can work harmoniously together the Museum Arch was relocated to its original line bring the building into the Weighbridge scheme and out of the shadow of the super modern Royal Yacht Hotel. An existing oak tree was accommodated within the design and energy efficient “LED” feature coloured lighting was installed to ensure that the area is imaginatively illuminated at night.

To facilitate use of the area for public activities pop-up services modules are concealed within paving in the main square area. Enquiries regarding use of the Weighbridge to host an event or exhibition should be directed to our Contract and Estates Manager on Tel: 617449.
